One of the things I loved here that was different than other places in the plains was the significant amount of flowing water in multiple creeks that eventually empty into a pond. However, what it lacks in physical challenge, it makes up in natural character.ĭespite being surrounded by residential neighborhoods, here you feel like you are seeing Oklahoma City before statehood when it was wild plains mixed with low tree forest.
For all 3 it is roughly 1.6 miles and only 62 feet of elevation so you can do it without breaking a sweat. The park as 3 separate circle trails or you can do what I did and do all 3. This is the number 38 in the state and 3 in the Oklahoma City area. On my trip to the Great Plains I looked to do several of the top hikes in each state. It really is something you have to see as it is so unique to Oklahoma. It works so well with the backdrop of gardens around the canal and the OKC downtown. It has a cannon for the Boomers and it even has a hidden figure watching the others race towards his claim for the Sooners. All of this well placed on either side of the Bricktown canal to tell the state's story. What those Boomers did not know, is that some people were tipped off about the claim to be there before the start to claim the best property (Sooners).Īs a work of art it is amazing, at least 25 different individuals, many on horseback. The mascot name tells this story of how thousands of people lined up on foot, horseback and carriage to claim land with the cannon shot signaled the start (Boomers). Collegiate sports fans will know this from the University of Oklahoma and Boomer Sooner. This is when land ownership was offered to anyone who could claim it from unassigned federal property in the Indian Territories or what would become Oklahoma.
Oklahoma has an interesting history, but one of its most renowned stories is the Land Run of 1889. It is art, gardens and history all combined in one incredible natural setting. This is one of the most awesome sculpture monuments I have ever seen, amazing. I highly recommend a visit, especially if you remember when it happened. The former road where the truck bomb was parked is now a reflection pond and the area of the former Murrah Building is lined by pine trees with chairs representing each person killed and by floor, the children from the day care are small chairs. Once you finish the museum, you go outside and walk the grounds. I did not expect to be so moved but the way it was done was so powerful and impactful.

You then go through the museum starting with the moments of confusion and rescue afterwards to the apprehension and trial of those who did it. You take the elevator up and go in a room set exactly as it was in 1995 for a hearing at 9:00, and you listen to a recording knowing the bomb will go off at 9:02. Now I remember it as a young adult of 25 but the specifics had faded until the visit. After the morning ceremony was over, I went to the memorial not knowing what to expect. When I began to set my trip I had no idea I would be in Oklahoma City for the 28th anniversary of the bombing.
